My recent trip to Nicaragua.
These photos are from my recent trip to Nicaragua. Most of the photos were taken in Esteli and Jalapa. Esteli is where most of the cigars from Nicaragua are made, and is also a tobacco growing region. Jalapa is mainly an area where most of the tobacco is grown. For the history buff, Esteli was the stronghold of the Sandinistas during the Nicaraguan Revolution of the late 1970's through the early 1990's. Nicaragua is a beautiful country, somewhat reminiscent of parts of California, and the people are wonderful. The tobacco barns were built by some of the first Cuban ex-patriots to come to Nicaragua in 1961 and are still in use today. This trip was sponsored by Tabacalera Tropical, an up and coming cigar manufacturer that also grows and processes it's own tobacco and makes it's own cigar brands. This is an unusual combination in the cigar industry and is done by only a handful of companies. I have the utmost respect for the great task they are doing because each facet of these processes is in itself tremendously difficult. I had a wonderful time and will be returning soon. Being in the factories reminds me of what it used to look like in Ybor City when I was a young lad. Don Barco January, 2005
