The Arturo Fuente Añejo Shark: Why It Sells Out and How to Get One
Twice a year, a certain kind of phone call starts coming into our Ybor City lounge: "Did the Sharks come in yet?" The Arturo Fuente Añejo No. 77 - the Shark - is the most requested limited cigar we carry, and it has been for years. Here's why, and how to actually get one.
What makes Añejo different
Añejo means "aged," and Fuente takes the word literally. The Connecticut broadleaf maduro wrapper is aged in cognac barrels before rolling - a process no other major brand replicates - over Dominican filler originally grown for OpusX. The barrel time shows up in the smoke: dark chocolate and espresso wrapped in a brandied sweetness that's instantly recognizable.
Why the Shark specifically
The No. 77 is the only vitola in the line that transforms from a round foot to a sharply box-pressed head - the "shark" shape. It concentrates the blend beautifully, it looks spectacular, and Fuente simply doesn't make many. Scarcity plus quality plus mystique: that's the whole formula.
When Añejo is released
Traditionally around Father's Day and the winter holidays, in quantities each retailer negotiates against years of relationship. Releases don't sit on shelves - at our shops an Añejo drop typically measures its lifespan in days.
How to actually get one
- Join our email list (bottom of every page). Añejo and Shark arrivals are announced there first - before they hit the shelf.
- Buy when you see it. "I'll come back this weekend" is how Shark stories end sadly.
- Try the whole line. The No. 46, No. 55 and No. 888 carry the same barrel-aged blend in less-hunted shapes.
While you wait for the next drop, the Don Carlos Eye of the Shark - a Cigar of the Year winner - scratches a similar itch and is easier to find. See everything currently in stock on our Arturo Fuente page.
