How to Store Cigars: Humidors, Bags and the 70/70 Rule

A premium cigar is a living thing - roughly 12 - 14% of its weight is water, and that moisture is where the flavor lives. Store it right and a good cigar gets better for years. Store it wrong and a great box turns to kindling in a week. Here's everything that matters.

The 70/70 rule (and the modern version)

Tradition says 70°F and 70% relative humidity. Most experienced smokers today run slightly drier - 65 - 69% - for a cleaner burn and easier draw. Anywhere in the 65 - 70% band at room temperature is excellent. What kills cigars is swing: hot cars, sunny windowsills, dry winter rooms.

Seasoning a new humidor

New cedar drinks water. Before trusting a humidor: wipe the interior with distilled water (never tap), place a cup of distilled water inside, and let it sit closed for 48 - 72 hours until the wood stops absorbing. Then add your humidification and your cigars. Skipping this step is the #1 reason new humidors "don't work."

How long do cigars keep?

Properly stored - essentially forever, and many blends improve for years as flavors marry. A dried-out cigar can sometimes be revived by slow, staged rehumidification over weeks, but it's never quite the same. Don't let it happen.

Buying for the humidor

Boxes are the humidor-builder's format - better per-stick pricing and the cigars age together. Every box on our shop page ships fresh from our own walk-in humidor, and our staff at any of our four locations will happily talk setups, from first tupperdor to full cabinet.
